Crops & Clips: Displaying Night-Heron

Fog lingers on the lake just after sunrise:

A Great Egret forages at the water's edge:

Recent rains have re-charged the lakeside marshes. A Tricolored Heron casts a nice reflection in the still water:

At lakeside, a Great Blue Heron preens:

The rookery in our local Wounded Wetlands has hosted up to eight pairs of Yellow-crowned Night-Herons and three Green Heron couples. Last summer, Hurricane Irma toppled most of the nest trees into the canal. I believe that this is why I found only one pair of Yellow-crowned Herons nesting, although two pairs of Green Herons have been reliably present:

This Green Heron started fluffing its feathers just as I took the photo. I liked the blur created by the action:

I saw one Green Heron gathering sticks for a nest, but so far have not located it:

Last week I captured a nice sequence of photos as a male Yellow-crowned Night-Heron in full breeding plumage displayed towards a rival male:

  4. Amazing photos...I don't know where to start. I guess I'll start with the birds I've never seen before, and didn't even know they existed...the Green Heron gathering sticks for its building project, and your wonderful 'flashy' shots of the Yellow-Crowned!

  16. Wonderful display pictures - they are dramatic looking birds. We had our first misty autumn evening here this week when I want to pick my daughter up from hockey. I rather liked it.

Sorry its taken me so long to visit, things have been pretty hectic here!

  17. Once again...these are exceptional. Here too, with hurricane harvey...the 'local birds' went elsewhere for quite a while.

I'm sending my thanks to you for sharing your blog photos with us bird lovers this weekend. It's our privilege to visit you from I'd Rather B Birdin'!!

  21. The displaying sequence is stunning. Just wonderful -- as are all of the other birds; with all the hurricane damage, it is good that there are as many birds as there are, it would seem like to me. Let's hope for a good storm-free summer this year. Thanks for sharing these wonders.

  23. Every time I see your pictures I resolve to buy a proper camera and start taking bird pictures! And then, I think, why should I - when we have so many spectacular artists like you?!? I will stick to my expertise if you do the same! We had a heron on our little lake today, but it took off before I could identify it. Stay tuned!
