Crops & Clips #1,060: Flashback to May, 2020

As I do on the first Thursday of each month, I enjoy looking back over my archived photos, taken three years previously, to remember how things were then as contrasted with events this year at our new home in Connecticut. As usual, I searched for images which reflected favorite memes: critters of all kinds (especially birds), skies and clouds, reflections, flowers and scenes which speak for themselves.

May started out with clear skies and pleasant temperatures. The month ended up more summer-like, with evolving morning storms over either the ocean to the east or the Everglades to the west, or both, which often provided afternoon showers.

My first bird photos of the month were on May 3, of a female Anhinga winging her way across the lake...

...while an adult Bald Eagle was heading over in the opposite direction:

Morning view along my favorite back route which I named the Bar Ditch Trail. It is an extinct farm road which runs on top of the spoils from a drainage canal. Summer rains will put much of it under water:

A startled Green Heron took flight:

This Northern Waterthrush peered out from the trailside brush:

I surprised a White-tailed Deer buck as it was wading across the ditch:

A Raccoon crossed the path ahead:

Common Nighthawks were nesting along the gravel road. This female flew out into the open to distract us:

Killdeer also tended their well-camouflaged nests:

Ospreys successfully raised one chick in their nest on the floodlight array above the neighborhood soccer field. The adult female is to the right:

At the local Bald Eagle nest, the smaller of the two eaglets was alone in the nest. The second-hatched, we presumed it was a male. His nestmate was 68 days old when she fledged the previous day, on May 22. He would remain in the nest until he was about 80 days old when he took flight, on June 3:

The male parent flew in to roost nearby:

Red-shouldered Hawk with a V-shaped flock of White Ibises overhead, which I did not notice until I processed the image:

Storms moving in:

Sunburst:

Rainbow:

Ruddy Daggerwing:

In our back yard, White Ibises lined up along the lake shore:

Entrance to our subdivision at dawn:

Full Moon setting over the Wounded Wetlands on May 7:

This month's Full Flower Moon provided inspiration for a pair of composite images:

  17. You surely have a good eye for an absolutely great picture! I really enjoyed it. We have a few eagles where I live, but not many. A lot of ducks, crows, stuff like that. We live about 8 blocks from Fox River. :) Have a nice day!
