SKYWATCH: False sunrise on western horizon

Sun rising in the west??? Actually this is a mirrored sunrise attributed to dust in the atmosphere. It causes a reflection of the rising sun rays which, though parallel like railroad tracks, appear to converge on the opposite horizon. Taken at 7:22 Am on October 20, 2012 in Miramar, Florida.

  22. The red-winged black bird photo is great. Love his beak, and also the irregular reflection shape of the rock he's on! The dust reflection is very interesting. I didn't know this was possible, I once saw a similar effect, when the sun rose directly behind Mt. Rainier and cast a huge shadow on the sky, but of course that was looking to the east.

  24. Beautiful image! We had an "eastern sunset" on Saturday - was amazing to see. And the west was just drab gray clouds.
